What Counts As A “Celebrity Sex Tape” Anyway?
A celebrity sex tape isn’t just any adult movie; we’re specifically referring to amateur footage of a public figure engaging in sexual activity.
The content could be anything from solo masturbation to a bacchanalian orgy, homosexual or straight, vanilla or downright kinky. These aren’t polished studio productions but home‑made recordings that often surface without their subjects’ consent.
Most sex tape scandals sit somewhere on a spectrum from “private video stolen and leaked” to “professionally distributed adult release marketed as a ‘home movie’.”
Even though most of these videos are now digital, we still call them “tapes” because early scandals were literally VHS cassettes.

What Are The Most Famous Celebrity Sex Tapes?
I’m not ranking these by “quality” (lol), although yeah… I have seen them all. 🤐
Instead, I’m ranking by cultural impact: the ones that became headline news, court cases and meme fuel.
And if we’re going to talk cultural impact, there’s really only one candidate for the top spot:
1) Pamela Anderson & Tommy Lee
If celebrity sex tapes have a “Year Zero,” it’s gotta be this one: the adventures of Pam and Tommy.
A private recording stolen from their home (by a disgruntled electrician!) became one of the first truly mainstream internet-era scandals, a drama that “shook the world” – it’s the template everyone else got measured against for the next two decades.
Filmed on their honeymoon in 1995, Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s intimate vacation video reportedly earned over $77 million for the eventual distributor, Internet Entertainment Group, while the couple made nothing and spent years fighting its release. Despite multiple lawsuits, the tape eventually spread across the internet and became a cultural touchstone.
(It’s also the subject of a 2022 TV dramatization that showed just how invasive the leak was!)
The tape lasts for 54 minutes; 8 minutes of which contain some of the most famous sexual intercourse ever committed to tape. Literally!

2) Kim Kardashian & Ray J
Whether you see this one as a privacy nightmare, a PR turning point, or the most consequential “leak” in modern pop culture… it’s impossible to deny the impact.
Way back in 2002 before the Kardashians were a ‘thing’, Kim made a sex tape with her then boyfriend, Ray J.
In 2007, just months before Keeping Up With The Kardashians began to air, the tape ‘found’ its way to adult video distribution company, Vivid Entertainment – a company known for their celeb exclusives.
The timing has been widely criticized with most people believing that the whole ‘leak’ was one huge publicity stunt. And, in a jaw-dropping moment of maternal management, media mogul and Kardashian Mom, Kris Jenner, reportedly negotiated the sale of the video, bagging the family between $10 million and $15 million in rights!
Though Kim was allegedly against the film being released, the ensuing results of her instant porn stardom were not without huge benefits.
Released under the title Kim Kardashian, Superstar, this celebrity sex tape is one of the most enduring releases on the planet. And though she has never appeared in any other porn movies or sex tapes, she remains one of the “most searched for” adult stars online.
Why it’s famous: timing, media amplification, and the way it became permanently stitched into celebrity-brand culture. This is the tape people reference when they say “ohh, sex tape scandal” – even if they’ve never seen a second of it.
3) Paris Hilton & Rick Salomon
This one landed right at the peak of early-2000s tabloid chaos, when reality TV, paparazzi culture, and broadband internet made for the perfect storm (if you were Paris Hilton!).
The tape – later titled One Night in Paris – was filmed in the early 2000s but sold and distributed in 2004 by Paris Hilton’s then-boyfriend, Rick Salomon, shortly after The Simple Life turned her into a household name.
Shot partly with night-vision and very much in “private home video” style, the footage quickly spread online and became one of the most widely discussed celebrity tapes of the era.
Hilton claimed she had not consented to the tape’s release and described the experience as “humiliating” – even 20 years on, the scandal still affects her. What followed was a horrifically messy legal back-and-forth: Hilton sued Salomon and the distributor, Red Light District, while Salomon attempted (unsuccessfully) to countersue her for defamation. It’s said that Hilton eventually received a reported $400,000 settlement.
Despite the lawsuits, the tape continued to circulate; a staple of tube sites, retro Fappenings, and a permanent footnote in early reality-TV culture.

4) Hulk Hogan (Gawker case)
This one is less about the tape itself… and more about the shitstorm of a nuclear blast that followed.
In 2012, Gawker published excerpts from a sex tape showing Hulk Hogan (real name Terry Bollea, RIP) having sex with the wife of his friend, radio host Bubba the Love Sponge. Hogan claimed he had no knowledge the encounter was being filmed.
The sex was fairly uneventful and vanilla. But what Hogan said on the tape was NOT – including an infamous N-bomb racial slur that would lead to his inevitable departure from WWE.
Unlike many celebrity tape stories that quietly fade into internet folklore, Hogan went scorched-earth legally.
The result was one of the most important privacy lawsuits in modern internet history. In 2016, a Florida jury awarded Hogan $140 million in damages, a verdict that ultimately forced Gawker Media into bankruptcy (later settled for around $31 million).
The case sent shockwaves through digital publishing and became a defining moment in the debate over celebrity privacy vs freedom of the press. Hogan got a massive payday, but his reputation never truly recovered.

5) Colin Farrell & Nicole Narain
This tape surfaced in the mid-2000s, during Farrell’s rise as one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men.
Filmed around 2003, the tape shows Colin Farrell with Playboy Playmate Nicole Narain and was allegedly recorded for private use. When Narain later attempted to distribute the footage, Farrell moved quickly through the courts to block its release.
A Los Angeles judge issued restraining orders preventing Narain from selling or distributing the tape, but – in classic internet fashion – copies still found their way online in 2006. Today, they remain easily surfaceable.

6) Rob Lowe
The oldest entry on our list…
Long before Pornhub, TMZ, or cloud storage, Rob Lowe became one of the first modern celebrities to face a full-blown sex tape scandal. And this one went all around the world… as far as Australia!

Yep, in 1988, a videotape surfaced showing Lowe engaged in sexual activity with not one but two women – one of whom was later revealed to be 16 years old (though legally above the age of consent in Georgia at the time). An open goal for his opponents, scandal swiftly erupted just as Lowe was campaigning for Michael Dukakis during the US presidential election.
The fallout was…predictably brutal. Lowe’s career stalled, endorsements disappeared, and his “Brat Pack” image took a massive, nosediving hit.
Years later, Lowe has spoken openly about the scandal, describing it as a turning point that eventually led him to sobriety and a complete career reset.
“The best thing that ever happened to me” he claims.

Well, speaking of threesomes…
In 2009, Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane found himself in headlines after a video surfaced showing him and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, in a threesome with former beauty queen Kari Ann Peniche.

8) Dustin Diamond
This one sits firmly in the “career desperation meets poor judgement” category.
In 2006, Dustin Diamond – best known as Screech from Saved by the Bell – released a tape titled Screeched – Saved by the Smell. Yup, I shit you not.
Unlike most entries on this list, the tape was deliberately marketed and sold.
Diamond later claimed the footage did not actually show him nude and instead featured a stunt double, or more specifically, a stunt wang. He also admitted he did it for the money, openly speculating that “it could have earned millions“.
The release was widely mocked and became emblematic of how former child stars sometimes attempt to pivot into adult notoriety… often with potentially cataclysmic results. Sadly Diamond passed away in 2021, and it was only then that his sex tape actually went viral.
Life… can be cruel.

9) Tonya Harding
Already one of the most controversial figures in American sports history, Tonya Harding added another chapter to her media saga with the release of a sex tape filmed with her then-husband, Jeff Gillooly.
Recorded on their wedding night in 1990, the tape was later sold to Penthouse in the mid-1990s, around the same time Harding was engulfed in the Nancy Kerrigan scandal.
The timing was widely seen as an attempt to control the narrative… or at least redirect media attention.

10) Verne Troyer
This one produced a universal reaction of “WTF?!”.
Come on, admit it… you were curious…
In 2008, actor Verne Troyer – best known as Mini-Me from the Austin Powers franchise – became the subject of a leaked sex tape that spread rapidly like wildfire. Yes, all 2ft 8 of him.
Troyer strongly condemned the release, stating that the tape had been stolen and distributed without his consent. Legal threats followed, but the footage had already escaped containment.
The incident became one of the uglier examples of how little empathy the internet can show when a celebrity is involved.
Tragically, Troyer later passed away in a a suspected suicide by alcohol intoxication.

11) Fred Durst

So… What Did We Learn?
If there’s one thing this list makes painfully clear, it’s that “fame” does NOT with a privacy warranty.
If anything, it invites the exact opposite.
Some of these tapes were stolen. Some were leaked. Some were aggressively monetised. And a few were embraced, repackaged, and turned into something resembling a career pivot.
